Shiori was born in Shinchi, Fukushima, Japan. Her mother was a shrine maiden who taught her all the old traditions and magics. Her father was a one night stand of whom her mother could not even remember his name. She had never expected to have a child as she had chosen not to marry, but she loved her daughter and tried to do her best for her.

After the devastation of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami and subsequent incidents at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant, Sayuri became worried as radiation levels rose in the nearby town of litate. Although Shinchi was not evacuated she still wanted her daughter well away from the danger until things had calmed down. Therefore, as Shiori had just turned 11 and was about to start her schooling, Sayuri arranged for her to attend Hogwarts as a transfer student.
